Yes, I’m aware this goes against conventional recruiting knowledge. But over the years, I’ve had better success hiring Filipino virtual assistants when I don’t do Skype or video interviews.
That said, I’ve also seen people do it successfully—so I’m amending my stance a bit. I still don’t think you should do video interviews unless:
- The job requires strong spoken English skills (like customer support), or
- You do the interview later in the recruiting process.
Filipinos generally don’t like video interviews—not because they’re bad at them, but because they have really good reasons for feeling uncomfortable. And those reasons might surprise you.
