My Worker’s Productivity Dropped, What Do I Do? – Practical Advice

“Hey, I hired a couple people and they started out great. But after a month, I noticed that their productivity dropped to the point that they’re only working half of what they used to.”

I asked my Filipino team why this happens.

  1. They’re bored. If you give them a super monotonous job, they could be tired of it.
  2. There are no clear instructions or expectations. When you give them vague instructions or you don’t give them clear targets, they won’t know what to strive for. And if you don’t give any feedback, it’ll make the situation even worse.  When they have no idea what they are working for, there’s no reason to keep going.
  3. They were trying to impress you in the beginning. Maybe because they really wanted to get the job, they were really working 50-60 hours a week. And the productivity you’re noticing now is what they can manage at 40 hours/week.

The first thing you need to do, for all these scenarios is to talk to them.  You need to talk to them to figure this out. When you open these lines of communication, you figure out what is wrong and fix things.

If it’s a simple case of boredom, you just need to give them something new to mix things up. Or maybe you need to give them something completely different. Maybe cut their hours and reduce their pay, it all depends on the situation.

The thing is you need to know what’s happening before you make a decision. Once you figure out what the problem is, you can solve it. That’s your job as the CEO.
