I believe in setting SMART expectations. I don’t only do it for work but also at home, just like my daughter’s race calendar.
If you don’t know what SMART means, its
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time-bound
You might have heard something about SMART goals. I think goals and expectations are two sides of the same coin — your OFS’ goal is to meet your expectations.
Having SMART expectations ensures that you and your OFS are on the same page. It lets them know what you want; it allows you, hopefully, to know exactly what you’re getting.
This is just how the human mind works — when you know what the goal is and the process, and there’s a SMART expectation involved, any progress is really successful. So it keeps your OFS motivated because they’re making progress. After all, they can see what’s expected of them.
One of the ways we apply this in our team is by having them fill me in on what they did during the day through their daily reports. This way, they get to go through the tasks they’ve done and any problems they might have encountered.
Let’s talk more about SMART expectations in this video; I’ll also share how a project begins and is done by my team.
