Rizal Day is a regular national holiday in the Philippines, and it is celebrated annually on December 30th.
Filipinos know this as ‘Araw ng Kabayanihan ni Dr. Jose Rizal‘. This day marks the anniversary of the execution of José Rizal on this day in 1896.
So, who is this Rizal guy?
Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda is a patriot, physician, and man of letters who inspired the Philippines nationalist movement.
Many interesting stories and anecdotes were written about Rizal. One well-known tale happened when he was still in grade school. It goes like this:
- Pepe (Rizal’s nickname) and his friends were sailing over Laguna de Bay to attend a nearby town fiesta
- The beauty of the water enthralled Pepe, so he began playing and touching it with his hand
- Suddenly, one of his slippers fell into the water. After a few minutes, Pepe took his other slipper and threw it into the water to his friends’ astonishment
- His friends asked him, “why not get the fallen slipper instead of throwing the other one?”
- Pepe replied very calmly, “My slipper is useless without the other. Someday, a poor fisherman will find them both.”
In 1886, he published his first novel in Spanish, Noli Me Tangere (1887), a passionate exposure of the evils of the friars’ rule. Its effects were comparable to Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. A sequel, El Filibusterismo (1891), established his reputation as the leading spokesman of the Philippine reform movement.
Jose Rizal is the Philippines’ most well-known and loved hero, and they dedicate the 30th day of December for him. This day is a regular holiday, and honestly, most new year parties start on this day. And if we’re being honest, it is safe to expect that your OFS may not be able to do tasks from today until after the New Year.
