I understand this question and why you’re concerned. You want your VA to be working their hours, especially if you’re paying them $20/hr or $30/hr.
But if you’re paying someone $3.50/hr or even $5/hr, the difference is between your VA working 15 hours instead of 20 hours for that week doesn’t really matter that much. What matters more is whether the work got done and if it was done well.
If they get all their work done in 15 hours, and it’s done well, it doesn’t make sense to penalize a VA for not taking the whole 20 hours to do their job. Isn’t it better to reward them with the full 20 hours pay for being efficient?
If you really want to track your VA’s time, we have TimeProof. It’s free if you want to use it but I don’t really use it and I don’t recommend it. And here’s why.
My VAs don’t feel comfortable being tracked. Nobody is. They’re already productive even without it. Tracking them would just make it seem like I don’t trust them. Tracking them puts me closer to micromanaging them and I don’t want to do that at all!
Here’s what I recommend instead. If you’re not sure, do a trial period instead. Use that time to gauge their productivity. Set that as a baseline of how much work they should be doing daily. And when their productivity is plummeting, you can always say something and give feedback.
If you want to learn more about my process, you should get my book: Outsourcing Lever. I’m giving physical companies away for free. All you need to do is pay for shipping and I’ll send you a copy!
