Hiring an OFS without making mistakes – Practical Advice

The question isn’t if you should outsource; it’s how to do it.

When I first started outsourcing, I outsourced through an agency.

The agency provided the VA. They have a pool of people that they have vetted ready to work.

  • After a week, the first VA they provided quit, saying that he didn’t know how to do the work.
  • The second VA quit after just a day stating he couldn’t handle office politics (their office, not mine).. Not good, but I held on, hoping that the third time was the charm.
  • The third VA knew nothing. But he was willing to try and ready to learn. This VA, now an Online Filipino Specialist, still works for me today.

What’s the takeaway on this? If I did the hiring myself, I didn’t have to go through the first 2 VAs they gave me. I would have gone to the 3rd one right away.

An agency can provide a VA right away, but they don’t know your business. They don’t care as much as you. You don’t know how they vet them.

Do the hiring process yourself.

If you hire an OFS yourself, you vet them yourself. You get a feel of who they are through the application process. And when you hire someone, you know what they’re capable of, and you know you want to work with that person. You’re not hiring blindly.

The right recruitment process is the key to finding the right person the first time. And that’s why I teach at OneVAAway.com. I’ll show you that finding the right virtual assistant doesn’t have to take that long. So even if you’re super busy, you’ll find the time to do the recruitment yourself. Because when you follow the process yourself, that’s how you find the best person for your business.

I also have a book that I am giving away for free, The Outsourcing Lever. It’s about how I have done outsourcing over the years. Get more information here.
